Before You Approach Social Media

Subtitle:  Social Media Tips For Newbies

I put this together for the LATISM-DC twitter party that I’ll be discussing later today.

This all of course is very dynamic and unique to who you are, and what you want to do in social media. These are not set rules, but general guidelines.  After time and dedication you’ll develop a keen ear to effectively identify subtle nuances that makes up your market, and learn how to leverage that knowledge.

Tip #1

PLAN

Before even getting involved in social media, identify what your purpose is. What do you want to do with it?
Are you there to engage customers? Create awareness? Get more traffic for your site? Become popular? Make money?

Choose and stick to it.

Without any end goal in mind a social media campaign will fail.

Tip #2

Observe

It’s not time to talk yet, but time to listen and observe.  Where is your target online?  What are they doing?  Who are the top influential people you need to contact?

Without knowing where anyone is, or how to speak to others your message will fall flat like a bad c-note.

Tip #3

Method

This is the “how” of your efforts.

Knowing what business you have in social media, and knowing who your target is and what they are doing it is time to form an engagement plan.

What sites will you use?  How will you measure your success?  What is your schedule?  What tools will you use?  Will you use a videos,  blogs…or both?

Next, I’ll be talking about how to make your message unique and how to stand out from the crowd.

Creativity is another key as content abounds. Originality and creativity can be a great equalizer for helping your brand stand out. Great post Louis!

Louis, this is a great post. Am sharing this with someone who was asking me about this. I also agree with José, that the “niche attack plan” is how you get creative and stand out. What is your hook and run with it?

Great stuff Jose. Creativity/Originality are great equalizers, if not the push ahead of the crowd.
