Subtitle: The “term “culture,” which originally meant the cultivation of the soul or mind, acquires most of its later modern meanings in the writings of the eighteenth-century German thinkers…a contrast between “culture” and “civilization” is usually implied in these authors, even when not expressed as such. Two primary meanings of culture emerge from this period: culture as the folk-spirit having a unique identity, and culture as cultivation of inwardness or free individuality. The first meaning is predominant in our current use of the term “culture,” although the second still plays a large role in what we think culture should achieve, namely the full “expression” of the unique of “authentic” self. -Velkley

Next to SXSW, Blogworld is the next biggest media expo on the planet.

The BlogWorld & New Media Expo just happens to be coming to my town this year and submission deadlines were due April 10th.

Here’s what I came up with along with the help of Jennifer Hutchinson of Mami2Mommy:

Curating Culture: Exploring the unique Influence of Latino Bloggers

This session focuses on how Latinos have approached social media from a cultural standpoint and have surpassed their own definition and expectations of what being social Latinos really mean. Although their common denominator is their Latino-ness, they now find their influence reaching beyond the world of culture, race & identity, and are engaged in the greater world of social media, technology and business.

No need to go into it right now as it has as good a chance as any to be accepted…I will light a vela.

Subtitle: On Twitter, all work and no play makes Jack a dull boy.

Here’s yet another way Latinos are talking on Twitter.

The term #WepaWednesday was created by my friend @MsLatina:

I recently started a new hashtag on Twitter called #WepaWednesday to celebrate all the tweeters, bloggers and events that make us go “WEPA!”

For those of you unfamiliar with the term, “Wepa”, pronounced Weh-Pah, is a Spanish slang word, which originated with Puerto Ricans. It was originally used when dancing Salsa as an exclamation of joy

Adding to that, my interpretation of #WepaWednesday is Latin-izing the popular ‘humpday’ term commonly used for Wednesdays.

If your on Twitter for business don’t be afraid to use this hashtag; think of it as a way to “mix it up” and give a BIG #WepaWednesday to your Latino friends.

Wepa!

Subtitle: Don’t reinvent the wheel

There’s a large percentage of companies who are engaging in social media with results that may be comparable to a fish out of water.

Why do I say that?

Because 65% of marketers are either just getting started or have been doing social media for only a few months, and even more interesting is that 86% of companies are doing it internally.

Click for full chart

This means that only 14% of companies are outsourcing social media.

A whopping 86% are looking to do it themselves, but initiative alone does not merit positive results.

These are both positive and negative signs: Positive because most companies are getting involved (only 1% are not); negative because the lack of experience may serve as a time capsule for positive results.

I don’t know of any similar statistics on Latino social engagement. It would be an interesting comparison. If my suspicions are correct we would see an increased percentage for companies (brands & marketers) as newbies in Latino social media engagement.

I also think the Hispanicize conference will be a major event going forward on this front, as well as the soon to launch Hispanicize website which is positioned to set the standard in Latino social media and showcase best practices.

Subtitle: Video is the vehicle of choice

Found a video online.

It comes along with the tag: Who is the New Generation Latino? New Generation Latinos are 2nd and 3rd generation U.S. Latinos who prefer English Language media compared to Spanish Language media. New Generation Latinos make up 60% of all Latinos in the United States and 80% of Latinos online. They fall between the ages of 18-34, are educated and are using social media sites.

This promotional video on Latino social media could be better in my opinion, but it makes a great excuse to get up and dance.

What’s important here is that video will be an important tool in 2011. A decade ago it took a few hundred dollars to push out a gigabyte of video, today it’s only pocket change. More so, the habits of younger generations are changing and they are watching internet video at increasing rates.

Check out some stats on YouTube below.
