Subtitle: Facebook is the McDonalds of Social Networking

I read an article called “Facebook is the McDonald’s of Social Networking,” where it gives a compelling visual showcase and commentary on how Facebook overtook the social media world, country by country.

But the one thing that stood out for me was the proposed underlying reason of why FaceBook has appealed to so many people – regardless of country:

But the only one that really explains Facebook’s success in so many countries and settings is the product and its design [...] And it did so because of its reliability, and its simple and intuitive design. More than any of its competitors, it’s a stable franchise: No matter who you are, you know exactly what to expect from every single Facebook page. Or, to put it another way: Facebook is winning because it’s the McDonald’s of social networking.

I tweeted:

Later, I tuned into Pandora while writing and thought that even though creativity is not oozing out like on MySpace, there is creativity present on Facebook. It’s not total conformity, but creativity bubbling in a controlled environment.

Some of the finer points can be discussed in detail, but one thing is for sure, and that is no matter what social-silo that you prefer you do have a choice to where you set up camp. The democratic options present in the social web are evident in that respect, and you can always create your own blog or website.

Rules set standards, but each situation is unique so you may have to make some tailor-made adjustments.

Because it is challenging to unlearn what we’ve learned or have done before, I often feel those who never learned the rules in the first place can be a great resource for new ideas. But that doesn’t mean to be foolish and not know the basics…you have to have some type of platform to jump off from.

So there you go. A post that is about nothing, which is actually saying something. I’m outta here.
