Under Promoted Social Media Tools

There are a few tools used in conjunction with new media that are not discussed much or make the media buzz.  They are standard and are in use everyday.

SKYPE

One such tool is SKYPE. These days you hardly hear anyone talk about it, yet EVERYONE seems to have a SKYPE address.  Skype is great:  free calls; share files; chat.   If you ask around, people from developers and consultants consistently us it, but like I said it’s the best kept secret right in front of your face.

Blackberry

Another tool I use about half the time is my BlackBerry phone. Either staying abreast on emails, phone calls or updating Twitter and other social media portals I can say half my business is built from this small device.

Blogs

Blogs seem to have lost their steam.  Blogging can be considered the root of today’s social media hype.  Once all the rage blogs hardly are exciting anymore.  But, blogging is not dead.  They are linked from virtually every social media hub in existense.  They are the personal digital-podiums of individuals who carefully compile their thoughts as posts to expand on ideas.  If social media are the great outdoors, then when you read a blog consider yourself in someone’s virtual living room.

(UPDATE 09/02/09: More praise for Skype.)

Here’s one more underpromoted Social Media Tool: http://My.Peoplebrowsr.com Primarily for power users. Monitor your brand; run campaigns; tweet and FB post efficiently/quickly; manage several Twitter accounts from one dashboard; read reports on who’s talking about you that you’re not following (and many other useful reports); search biographies; tag people into your own groups; hastag conversations are easy to manage; I could go on and on. It’s da bomb.

I am still on the fence about Skype for social media. For my work in developing Spanish content, it is awesome, since I get to connect with my team in Latin America all the time and actually see their faces. But I haven’t used it much for actual social media interaction.

Big fan of Ping.FM and HootSuite, though. Also YouTube is still incredible, but we also use Vimeo.

I agree that it’s not a great social media portal, but an awesome tool.
